Hello, my name is Nhi and I am the founder of Dragon Fang Tattoo. Dragon Fang Tattoo is an art collective that focuses on creating a positive work place that supports personal and artistic growth.

This is the first tattoo studio in Nebraska that is Asian American, woman, and queer owned tattoo studio.

After nine years and nurturing a dream, Dragon Fang was born. I strive to create change that ripples through the space and industry. Dragon Fang Tattoo is about creating a unique, safe, welcoming, and upbeat experience for both clients and the artists in residence.

Dragon Fang was inspired by Fenghuang, a chinese phoenix.

When Dragon Fang Tattoo was born, it came with separation, death, grief, and rebirth.
In China and Japan, it was a symbol of the imperial house, and it represented "fire, the sun, justice, grace, and fidelity". According to legend, the fenghuang appears very rarely, and only to mark the beginning of a new era in history, hiding during times of trouble. It may appear in peaceful, prosperous times, or at the birth of a virtulous ruler. Once a new monarch had taken over, the bird came to symbolize an era of peace and prosperity, with a new, benign emperor, and was often used as a symbol of the Empress.

Hello sweet friends! Clients! Loved ones!

I haven’t talked about it in a while but sweetie @bblonglegz reminded me that people do ask why I am not Google listed and for two years whether it was Dragon Fang Tattoo or my own personal art career — I’ve made it even more private and ‘underground’. It’s been a lot of word of mouth (powerful!).

If you’ve been around @weeeenhihutjrs tattoo journey — you know it’s been a rough ride (iykyk) and sprouting two years ago being the first Asian-Queer owned shop in Nebraska. Being able to sustain business in the Midwest after 2020 after Asian hate rhetoric and emboldening micro aggression to turn to violence, dox’ing of my home address, attempts to call DHHS to prevent me from locking my doors for protection (nice try), and attempts to black list me and ending my tattoo career. In literal words directed to me, “you’re committing tattoo career suicide”. Dramatic, but okay.

I serve no man. I learn from them. And I’ve learned a lot— how to protect my peace, how to protect my vulnerability from people who cheer for my downfall or shortcomings, and to focus my energy towards myself, people who do support me, and my business. And for me to say—Four years later, I’m still here is a feat.

Who knows what the next 4 years will bring? I’ve worried less about what people will do to me and focus on what am I going to do about it. Mind my business, have faith, and grow.

Year of the Snake 🐍

Better late than never! Happy belated Lunar New Year, friends 🧧! What a weird and uncertain time we are living in.

The snake is expected to bring about transformation and new beginnings. Though the snake may get a bad rap across many Western cultures, the animal is actually a celebrated and revered sign across the Eastern hemisphere. And its year is expected to be one of positive transformation as people slither into new beginnings — if they’re willing to move on.

It’s all about shedding toxicity in personality, in character traits.
It’s shedding the ego, letting go of the past, letting go of anger, letting go of love lost. This is the year where that kind of growth — personal and macro, internal and external — is very much possible.
The snake is an auspicious sign for inner work, whether it’s releasing unrealistic expectations of loved ones or getting rid of bad habits.

I recently made a trip to Orlando, FL and made an appointment with Orlando based artist, Kuu [kōō] @kuutattoos who was born in Japan. 🇯🇵

These are the sweet juicy cherries she gave me! And along with that we had a cute crochet exchange. 🧶 handmade dragonfruit by Kuu!

If you’re ever in the Florida area, be sure to visit this sweetie! She’ll be tattooing at a convention in Jacksonville, FL at the end of July!

Being in Nebraska and having a low population of various Asian cultures. Asians here make up 2% of the population considering the various ethnicities and subcultures.
It’s not surprising to not see many Asian or queer artists, especially that of women. When historically in America it started with biker gangs and skin heads.

Even when I was designing tattoos for friends, drawing and painting on my skin —I didn’t even dream exactly of being a tattoo artist because there was no representation here for me. I landed an opportunity when folks were getting my work tattoo’d before I got into tattooing.
And to see it and be in a room full of people who looked like me, having community — it’s life changing. It’s inspiring.

Hannah originally grabbed this as a flash piece with monsteras as the potted plant and a different pot. She regularly travels to see me. So I decided to make a spin of the original design I had to curate something personally for her and helped her with placement.

I wanted some facial embellishments and something on my neck to elongate and give the illusion of a longer neck. Due to tattooing and being an artist, we tend to have an artist neck crease line!

And it just made me feel 1000x times better and did give the illusion I wanted and Una even mentioned it’s like my throat chakra illuminating!

It’s amazing what tattoos and art get to do to our confidence! It is like permanent jewelry! 💎 Una nailed it! :-) 💥

I’ve been MIA and protecting my privacy after receiving for months since standing on my own— lies, prolific racial and Asian hate that were threatening the safety of myself and this space I’ve been cultivating.

Ever since the pandemic, many businesses were affected and while tattoos may seem to have grown in popularity, so have micro aggressions, attacks, and scapegoating towards the Asian community.
Instead of returning energy and partaking in the “he said she said” to defend my creditability, I have distanced myself and taken measures to sustain my peace. And I hope for others to do the same.

Instead of combating what I’m against, I am centering myself again and focusing my energy on building what I’m for.
When I look around me, I am reminded of the love and kindness and resilience that got me here. The growth that has came along with navigating this industry where representation of myself was not present. I knew this path for myself wasn’t going to be easy and carving the one less traveled. I chose this path and this is my dream.

The personal challenges of being a First Generation Vietnamese Asian American and what that looked like for me and growing up in an abusive and poverty stricken household. A survivor of molestation and sexual assault. I have had a lot of setbacks the past couple of years, and I’ve learn over the years of finding my footing moving to Omaha to lean into a section of this community that has carved a space out for me and realize I needed to prioritize my safety too.

This is cultivating a safe space for myself and the artists that resonates with the vision, the comradely, and the clients and friends that see themselves in us. 👁️ When we choose to see each other, we can hold space for one another — and although our realities are different, we are in the same multiverse together. All connected.

At the right place, at the right time. This tattoo was a small commission while touching up some color for Czamia. One of the last tattoos I did before I refunded deposits to simply rest. The crowdfunding is helping me just allow myself to have the time to replenish my resources and almost have this clean slate to start from.

It is a reminder that we all will die. After confronting all the threats, grieving, educating, self advocacy, and putting myself currently into the justice legal system.

There is something special about doing this tattoo. It’s is a surrender to the universe and the grid of timing. It is knowing my purpose. It is making this space safe for me and safe for the people who see me and want to support a space like this. I’m not going to call it a safe space but it is for me.

Remember to have hope. Remember to live.
This is a hiatus. While Una will be in surgery soon, I will be putting myself through some other hoops.

Abortion is a human right. Abortion is healthcare. And having the choice to have or abort your pregnancy is your choice.

I was always told before being a business owner to keep politics out. I think by fiercely standing up for what I believe in and advocating for myself as an Asian woman and person of color— it’s created a community for me that gives me hope for change and fighting the good fight.

@_nebraskaar_ was generous to supply us with resources and to our patrons upon their appointments with stickers and PLAN B’s located in the lobby for our patrons who come to see us.

To return this gracious favor and for putting in the work we need in Nebraska, @_nebraskaar_ is a nonprofit organization that relies heavily on volunteer work and donations. With everything we have going on, this is a good time to fund our local Abortion resources.

Because of limited resources here and availability, I wanted to make just a printable coloring sheet / flash tattoo designs that CAN be taken anywhere to have done by the artist of your choosing. I’m making it easy for the artists because it’s practically a premade stencil! Just don’t take it to a local fool named, Brad, or a shop that supports misogynists behavior. 🤗🐿️
So I just always recommend that you research your artist and do a simple google search that they’re not outwardly racist, have gone for my career before it started, or quite literally have articles and reports of being some woman beater at the very least.

I do ask if you use these designs whether the purpose of just printing them out and coloring or tracing, OR to things like bringing it to another artists. Please just take the time to donate $1 + to the amount of your choosing.

🩸💋Red Ink tattoos can heal beautifully!
🌟Myth, it will not heal like a scar or age poorly if you take care of it. Protect it from direct sun exposure and wear spf. Consider because red is less contrasted when it isn’t paired with black but it doesn’t mean it can’t age well.
🌟 Skin should be considered like sponges 🧽 in ways. And no, this isn’t because the owner really likes SpongeBob. Although depositing ink can bring life back to a tattoo, placing too much ink in one place (at wrong depths) will cause blow outs AND as we age, the pigment underneath our dermis breakdowns, it doesn’t ‘fade’ and it slowly but gradually will spreads on its own as our skin elasticity changes.
☝🏼 although, touch ups are welcomed and recommended even more by clients who are taking care of their tattoos. Consider a retouch 3-10 years depending on your own profession / moisturizing / sun exposure.

But the enjoyment of tattoos I hope is to enjoy them for the present, a chapter, and a mark that can stretch and fold with us but it’ll carry us through a life time of when we got them.

Here is a simple infographic regarding what to anticipate at a clean 🧼 tattoo shop! Specifically in your experience of being tattoo’d at Dragon Fang Tattoo!

I’ve been asked by mentees before, “What do I do if I have someone with HIV?” I’ve also had clients who had various illnesses who felt judged in other spaces. A lot of what shapes my career and experiences and mentoring is summed in the experience given here.

Word of advice across the board,
🗣️ Don’t exclude folks who have blood borne illnesses nor treat them differently. Medical disclosure is confidential and such be regarded with respect. Actually, treat the procedure as if everyone did, in order to ensure at all points there is no cross contamination and risks. Anyone performing their job without gloves is just a big yikes to me. That shouldn’t be a normal and unless we speak out about it— folks who are new to tattooing and may have a hard time speaking out for themselves can find themselves in biohazard risky spaces.

In addition, we are a shop that still wear masks. Here’s other things we do to ensure you’re stepping into a clean shop the day of your appointment. We are in the cross hairs of illnesses and Una’s recoveries and surgeries. So we ask that clients still respect our mask policy. Rest assured, we will provide masks upon your arrival at your appointment time.

SHUT UP!! First session on this back piece done by our talented apprentice, Una @unanovotny_art and walked through a few more tips and tricks by @weeeenhihutjrs ! This design is gorgeous and frames the back beautifully.
And it doesn’t need the black fill to be showcased. Just look at the linework! But be sure to follow Una and stay tuned for the completed project.

So proud of this bean 🫘 blossoming talent. To see her in action, and to take the skills learned and continually grow to a whole new level. This was learning a little more of symmetry and thicker lines—done with a thicker needle for a bold look.

Sadly, this sweetie is going to be down and out in different sequences from surgeries, so be nice to Una as she’s going to do her best to navigate the upcoming months in strides.

I do want to thank everyone for sharing our fundraiser and reminding Una she’s important and loved too! And helping us hit 800 followers on this shop’s page in a little over two weeks!

Hi friends and our community! 💝✨
I am helping to raise money to help Una through her upcoming surgeries.
As you may or may not know, Una's is undergoing a lot. She is receiving a double mastectomy to remove the possibilities of breast cancer after getting through 2022 with Una's mother fighting breast cancer and having other previous family members go through it.

On top of that, on January Friday 20th Una will be out of work recovering initially from a herniated disc surgery that has been prolonged and needed. Which considering if all goes well, between the two upcoming surgeries it’ll take her out from both of her jobs for 5-6 weeks.

As you know, I, myself also am young PoC small business owner, unexpectedly in this, if you know you know, that I simply want to see Una in better health and in better spirits. But with being a self employed tattoo artist doesn't come with the greatest of benefits. It takes time to be out, while tattoo supplies cost and so does rent. For two places. I want to be able to support Una as much as I can, and I know from just the grapevine, this is a loving opportunity to do so for sweetie pie Una.

I heard my girlie was stressing, so even she doesn’t know I’ve been spinning my webs. 🕸️ Surprise!

I figure some free downloadable printable that people could pick their donation amount was a friendly approach and no pressure to give!

Here is a flash sheet designed by Nhi in celebration of 🐲Dragon Fang Tattoo. These designs will be done twice each before the design is retired.

Nhi herself is grabbing the peony money bag 💰 as it’s a sign 🪧 and good luck for abundance and prosperity! So who wants to be her twin? 👯‍♀️

🐉A dragon claw represents fearlessness and power. They often connote the triumph over evil or a challenge in one's life.

🧧 The fan is a symbol of wealth, wisdom, and authority.

If you’re interested in one of these designs, you won’t be booked until Late February-April. A deposit is required to reserve a time and date. If you are interested email nhihighsocks@yahoo.com and your availability date/times Wednesday-Saturdays between those months.

Because of the # of emails and inquires, please allow 3-5 business days after the holiday to get back. If you don’t hear back beyond the five days, you can unfortunately assume you did not get the design.
